GOD Tony Scott always delivers. Every single thing the NSA does to fuck with Will Smith in this movie is by now almost certainly 100% legal and a million times worse. The bad guys won. Also, the evil NSA guy played by Jon Voight's birthdate is given as 9/11/40 in spoken dialogue *EYE EMOJI*

Tony Scott is clearly having a blast with this vintage conspiracy vibe revved up by 90s blockbuster energy. Great ensemble cast. A little long but it's engrossing where it counts. The dated tech also gives it a sleek aesthetic that is unmatched.

i saw this in the theater four or five times when it came out, used loose change to buy tickets when my allowance money ran out, which i guess tells you about the sort of 12 year old i was - it's been one of my most beloved favorites ever since, and it only gets better and more relevant with time. can't believe we used to be able to walk into a theater and see tony scott's beautiful, impeccably crafted thriller about an innocent black man and his loved ones mistakenly caught up in the corrupt government surveillance apparatus with every white man in sight trying to see who could cut each other's throat first all in the name of…

Review by Josh Lewis ★★★★
Tony Scott updates the 70s paranoid conspiracy thriller for the hyper-active, bullet-paced Bruckheimer blockbuster era and the terrifying hi-tech voyeurism of the incipient NSA surveillance state we now all know and love. How silly and stock some of the characterizations are vs. how sobering its depiction of this political reality is is part of the charm. Kinda crazy how much this not only got right but how perfectly ok everyone is with the fact that it did. I do think Scott would end up taking a similar concept (and dynamically kinetic style) to a much more ambitious, expressive place with Déjà Vu, but Smith and Hackman make for good pairing, the chaotic chase energy is consistent, and it is undeniably…

Review by Michael James ★★★½
A solid conspiracy techno action thriller dealing with a even more relevant-till-date topic of surveillance and privacy invasion by the government (NSA in this case) in the name of national security. The stylish direction from Tony Scott and the desperately brilliant performance from Will Smith are major highlights. Though it doesn’t hit the highs in terms of thrills and gets ridiculous at times, the fast paced screenplay and its solid characters keep it interesting. On the other hand, they don’t make such movies anymore, making you only crave more for such 90s styled action thrillers. Reason why the movie has aged well. A solid watch.

“I blew up the building.”
“Why?”
“Because you made a phone call!”Tony Scott the god. This is basically porn for anyone that loves shots of satellites moving in space, GPS images flashing across the screen, and guys behind screens saying things like “can you get a feature extraction and pattern matching on him?”. What a rush. Jack Black is also really horny in this for no reason.

I think it would be remiss of me if I didn't start this review talking about the incredible cast in Enemy Of The State.
It's one of those rare films that seeks to impress people, like me, who cannot resist a great cast by having high quality and respected character actors in little more than cameos and on several occasions not even bothering to credit them. Any film that has uncredited performances by Philip Baker Hall, Tom Sizemore and Jason Robards is one that is absolutely ridiculous in the very best ways possible.
It's also a film that doesn't even have one of its main stars, Gene Hackman, pop up until about halfway in. Robards and Gabriel Byrne are disposed…

Action!: The Scott Brothers - 80s Never Dies With Tony At The Helm
...and so a new chapter begins in the life and career of our dear friend Tony.
With all these billions of cuts per second, one would be forgiven for thinking this was a hundred percent terrible thing for a film to do, given the final results in many action films in recent years. But after watching this film, I think this is not only a great idea, it also makes the movie much more thrilling and exciting. To pull off this type of editing you really need the right editor, but also a good director and story.
Luckily for us, all of these ingredients can not only… -
Review by Willow Maclay ★★★½
In many ways this feels like a test run for some of the more heavy science fiction via screens formalism present in Deja Vu. The opening sequences are especially interesting in how it uses hyper editing to convey a sense of viewing your every move. Satellites puncture privacy, big brother is watching you. Computer anxiety
Cool shit, Tony.

First time watch. Nobody told me this was a Christmas movie! Fun throwback to the good old political thrillers of the 70s. I sure miss Eugene Hackman.
